It's Gonna Be a Scorcher!

Oh wait...it already is. It has been a super long time since I can last remember feeling this hot, and guess what? Germany doesn't do air conditioning. One of my colleagues mentioned that, when he was in Florida a few months ago, he was always cold because the AC was blasting in every room all the time. While I can completely relate (I am also often cold in the US), I still think that a little bit of cool air when it gets this hot (it is currently 34 degrees Celsius with absolutely no breeze) would be beneficial for everyone. Just a little? Please? Not gonna happen, but seriously, my lab is like a sauna.

I know I only talked (very) briefly about my trip to Karlsruhe last weekend, but my impression can really be summarized with one word: GORGEOUS. I loved it!

Note: Rather than posting a bunch of pictures (which takes forever because the uploader on here is kinda dumb), I added a slideshow on the right which will cycle through all my pictures from this trip :)

As I mentioned, yesterday I went to see my first opera, Dido and Aeneas! I have to admit it was by far the weirdest show I have ever seen, and I am still not sure that I understood what was happening (even though it was performed in English), but it was enjoyable because one of the female leads sung like an angel. Her name is Elizabeth Wiles, and she is American! She's a graduate of the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and damn, she sure can sing! Lovely. I found the rest of the show and the theatre itself to be very average, even though from the outside the theatre looks like it is very grand and fancy. Also, I had to pay 2euro50 for a program! But I'm glad I went, and it certainly helped take my mind off the fact that I was missing all the fireworks for the second year in a row :(

And then there is tomorrow. Deutschland gegen Argentina. Will it be the end of our run? I certainly hope not, but it should be an exciting game! Even better is that I will be watching the game at my first Schwenker, where Schwenker will be schwenkt! I realize I probably sound like a crazy person right now, but it's a Saarland thing. Pretty much a BBQ, but much cooler. I'll try to remember to take a picture for my next post.

GO DEUTSCHLAND!

RANDOM GERMAN FACT: Germany has won the World Cup 3 times, and placed in the Top Three 9 times. Italy has also won 3 times, while Brazil has won 5 times. And this year, Holland just eliminated Brazil in the quarter finals!
