Work, Work, Work

Well, would you look at that. I actually made it a whole week without posting! I thought maybe I was getting a little post heavy, so I decided to cut back - good decision? Bad? Let me know if you think I should post more often :)

On another note, today is my 34th day in Europe. I've been here for over a month...crazy, eh? But I've still got a long way to go, as my trip will last 105 days total. Fine by me!

So. This week. Work. Work. Work. I've been doing the 9 to 5 thing for 3 weeks now, and I think I've already become a workaholic. I arrive about 8:45, and I often don't leave until 6. Not to mention that apparently I'm nutty because I take work to do at home...but there is just so much to do! And I love it...

My big, 7-week experiment is officially under way! I'm testing to see if gold nanoparticles cause mutations in the DNA of hamster lung cells, and while the techniques are perhaps fairly straightforward and somewhat repetitive, the layout of the experiments is complicated and the end result will be fascinating regardless of the outcome. I also have to make a short powerpoint presentation to present to my group (of about 11 people) every Friday about the work that I do each week. And while I didn't have to present last week, and this week I was allowed to present in English (everyone else presents in English too)...my boss has asked me to try it in German from now on. OH JEEZ! As if I wasn't nervous enough. As most of you know, I'm pretty bad at presentations. But, while I find myself terrified every Friday morning, I know that having a presentation every single Friday for 10 weeks (plus my big seminar at the end) means that I will be getting a lot of practice. And practice is good!

I don't really think I have much else to say. The weather currently sucks, so I didn't do anything exciting last weekend. Today I plan to wander around Saarbrücken again, because there is just so much to see here! And tomorrow, if it doesn't rain, I might finally make it to Trier!

Bis bald, mes amis! Oh wait...wrong language. Meh - I'm in Saarland! Here, they speak Germench. Frenman. Deucais. Franeutch. Or something.

RANDOM GERMAN FACT: This might just be a Saarland thing, or maybe it's just a Fraunhofer IBMT thing...but coffee and tea are not morning drinks. After lunch, everyone gathers in the kitchen, and drinks a cup of coffee or tea! Often cake is also present, and lately betting on the Füssball matches of the day is also a must. I guess it is hard to make it through the afternoon?

  1. Hi, Heather! I, of course, love the frequent posts, but do whatever you'd like! It's so great to read that you love the work you're doing and based on what you've described, it sounds like you're really getting your feet wet!! Well done!
